More than 60 people have been arrested and investigations are under way after the violent invasion of the US Congress in Washington DC on Wednesday.
Four people died when a mob loyal to President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building, damaging property and forcing lawmakers to take refuge.
A top Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer called for Mr Trump to be removed from office with immediate effect. Meanwhile those in the Trump administration have their posts, including Transport Secretary Elaine Chao over the riots with several lower-level Trump administration officials also resigning,
The leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, says if Mr Trump is not removed from office, impeachment should be an option.
Donald Trump’s mid-day “Save America” rally (17:00 GMT) saw thousands of people gather near the White House, to hear the president speak. Later crowds marched on to US Congress Capital where Trump-supporters disrupted a count of the Electoral College to certify Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the presidential election..
He told crowds gathered at the rally “We’re going to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue… and we’re going to the Capitol and we’re going to try and give… our Republicans, the weak ones… the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.”
The President has refused to accept the election result but it was hoped that after the numerous investigations and recounts that no evidence of voter fraud had taken place and that Mr Biden won the Presidential election with an overwhelming majority. Mr Trump had previously shown sign of some acceptance of the transferal of power and but still did not concede to the findings of the recounts or lack of evidence to his allegations of voter fraud.
Many world leaders today are criticising Mr Trump’s involvement in the riots that took place, not too dissimilar to his stoking of racial tensions during his tenure in Government.
