Farewell 2020 Edinburgh Drone Display

The Edinburgh Hogmanay 2020 videos were taken near the remote area of Spean Bridge and others capturing Edinburgh’s skyline. Show drones take off and forming various shapes, including a luminous stag seen flying across the sky.

The software used to choreograph the drone movements in the sky to form the images was created by Gary Wilson, a Scottish illustrator, the Edinburgh’s Hogmanay festival said.

The show entitled “Fare Well” features a new piece by poet Jackie Kay, bidding goodbye to 2020 and wishing a better 2021 – an excerpt from the video is below

The poem “Farewell to 2020” bids a farewell to 2020 and wishes a better year for 2021. The poem is marrated by David Tennant and other Scottish actors.

This is believed to be so far the UK’s largest swarm drone display, recorded in the Scottish Highlands and with a backdrop cut to spectacular views above Edinburgh.

The first part (Part One of Fare Well) looks back at the year gone by – it’s words remembering funerals and weddings cancelled, collective griefs and despair and a feeling that the world has become like a large village.

A small hand raised at a window. Lips to the glass, that last smile, heart-rent. So candle light the night sky And dress the long tables.  Let us remember and never forget That we won’t let our hopes fizzle out Someone hears the Bereavement Song through till dawn And someone reads the lost stories of the stars.  They pull their slow oars through the clouds; And every old hello has become a goodbye. And every new year makes a brand-new cry. And every new year confronts an empty sky.A’ tarraing nan ràimh maill ac’ tro na neòil, ’S soraidh slàn air ràdh ri gach halò.   ’S gach bliadhn’ ùr ag èigheach às ùr ’S gach bliadhn’ ùr a’ cuir aghaidh ri speur bàn  They pull their slow oars through the clouds; And every old hello has become a goodbye. And every new year makes a brand-new cry. And every new year confronts an empty sky.
