A Pakistani court has jailed 10 men for life for involvement in the attack on education activist Malala Yousafzai who was awarded last years Nobel Peace prize for her work in promoting education for women around the world following her shooting when then aged 15 years of age in the Swat Valley of Pakistan in 2012.
Her shooting at the time provoked Worldwide condemnation of the members of a local Taliban group who shot her in the head, believing her as a woman gaining education in defied their interpretation of Islamic conduct and teaching. She was immediately offered safety by British authorities for a life saving operation and treatment for the injuries she suffered.
She was awarded last year’s Nobel Peace Prize for campaigning for children’s rights, despite the risk to her life.
Officials in Pakistan say that 10 men have been identified as responsible for the shooting but this does not include the man named as chief suspect belonging to the Pakistani Taliban.
Ataullah Khan, a 23-year-old militant, who was identified by a police report at the time of the shooting did not appear in the list of 10 men convicted on Thursday.
